Wild Camping in Dovedale

See what’s included

You don’t need more YouTube videos. You need one night out.

You’ve probably read a fair bit already. Kit lists, “is it legal” articles, forum threads about the best pitch spots. Maybe you’ve even bought a tent that’s still got the tag on.

None of that gets you out the door on your own. What stops you is not knowing where you’re actually allowed to pitch. It’s not knowing if you’ll be freezing by 2am. It’s not having anyone to ask “is this normal?” when the wind picks up.

So instead of watching another guide, come out with one for one night. I’ll fill all those gaps beforehand, take you to a spot I already know works, and be in the tent ten feet away while you do it for real. After that, you won’t need me, you’ll know everything you need to know and have gained the confidence to get out there on your own.

Here’s exactly how a night out with me goes

One night that changes how every future one feels.

Before you go

Out on the hill

What you take home

Is this actually for you?

Good for:

  • Complete beginners who’ve never spent a night outdoors and don’t want their first go to also be their first mistake
  • Walkers who’ve done plenty of day hikes and want to take it further
  • Anyone who doesn’t own kit yet and doesn’t want to guess-buy £500 of gear before they know if they’ll actually like this
  • People who’ve meant to try it for years and just need the shove

Not for:

  • A stag do, hen do or big group camp-out — this is one-to-one or a small group, not a festival
  • Anyone not up for a couple of hours’ walk with a pack on to reach the spot
  • Anyone wanting a fully “find your own way, no guide” night — I choose and scout the pitch, that’s rather the point of coming with me

Chris Waldron on Striding Edge, Helvellyn

30 years doing this before I ever taught it

I’m a Mountain Leader, but that’s not where this started. I’ve been wild camping for over 30 years, hundreds of nights across the Peaks, Lakes, Snowdonia, Scotland and France, in everything from a bivvy on a summit to a cave in a snowstorm.

I got my base weight under 3kg by building my own gear, ran a wild camping gear company off the back of it, and I’m still more comfortable sleeping outdoors than in my own bed.

learning so many new skills

Think you've been wild camping before? I'd definitely recommend going with Chris- he taught me so much & we had a really fun experience in a cave in the lakes, learning so many new skills and about survival/ equipment & wild camping in general. Great guy, very knowledgeable 10/10 -fantastic!!!

Everything you need to actually do this, not just think about it.

A full night, guided

Kit, if you need it

Your choice, both ways

Nothing here is left to chance

You’re not gambling on a random field. I take you to ground I already know, somewhere we won’t be moved on and properly sheltered, so that part’s handled before you arrive.

You’re not gambling on kit either. Turn up with just a sleeping bag if that’s all you’ve got, try my gear, and only buy your own once you know what you actually like sleeping in.

Oh and if the weather’s bad (unless there’s a hurricane forecast) we go ahead anyway: it’s all part of the experience.

Where would you like to go from here?

A few details on your preferred date and location, and I’ll get back to you to sort the rest.

Stop reading about it.

Start living it.

P.S. All you actually need to bring is a sleeping bag. You either bring your own gear to test and learn about, or use some of mine – tent, stove, mattress, whatever you need.
